Configuring Sigma and Gathering Connection Information

This article describes the first step of Connecting to Sigma MCP Server: create a new account type or make sure an existing one has all the necessary permissions, generate a token, and copy the connection information from your Sigma account needed for authentication in Concierge.

Prerequisites:

  • A Sigma account type with the Use Sigma MCP with OAuth permission and all the other relevant permissions enabled.

In this article:

  1. Set User Type
  2. Gather Connection Information
    1. Copy Server URL
    2. Copy Application ID and Client Secret Value
  3. Generate Token

1. Set User Type

Perform this step if you selected the "User OAuth" Auth Type.

To use the Sigma MCP Server connection correctly, you need a user account with specific permissions enabled. You can either create a new user type or use a default one.

Make sure the account type has the following permissions and access levels:

  • Use Sigma MCP with OAuth
  • View connections, View data models, and/or View workbooks, depending on the type of data source you want to use
  • Can view access to the document you want to search, explore, or query
  • Can use access to the connection you want to search, explore, or query
  • Can view access to the workbook that contains the agent you want to call
  • Create, edit, and publish workbooks and Create, edit, and publish workbooks with Sigma MCP, to build workbooks
  • Can edit access to the existing workbook you want to edit
  • Create, edit, and publish workbooks with Sigma MCP, to take a screenshot of a workbook page or element

2. Gather Connection Information

Perform this step if you selected the "User OAuth" Auth Type.

To enable authentication, you need to collect the Application ID, Client Secret Value, and Server URL, and specify the user account whose credentials will be used for authentication.

2.1. Copy Server URL

Access your Sigma account, click the user icon in the upper right corner and go to Profile > Integrations

Copy the Sigma MCP URL value.

2.2. Copy Application ID and Client Secret Value

To get the Application ID and Client Secret values, make an API call to https://<your_sigma_domain>/data/editor/service/validate-oauth. You can use the same domain you copied from the Sigma MCP URL.

Code Example

curl -X POST "https://<BASE_URL>/mcp/register" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "client_name": "<CLIENT_NAME>",
    "redirect_uris": ["<REDIRECT_URI>"],
    "grant_types": ["authorization_code", "refresh_token"],
    "response_types": ["code"],
    "token_endpoint_auth_method": "clidatent_secret_post"
  }'
FieldValue
client_nameEnter a fitting and descriptive name for the client.
redirect_uris
Enter a redirect URI in the format https://<your_metric_insights_instance_name>/data/editor/service/validate-oauth.

In the response, you will receive the Application ID (client_id) and Client Secret (client_secret). Copy these values to use when configuring the External Resource in Metric Insights.

3. Generate Token

Perform this step if you selected the "Defined in configuration" Auth Type.

This Auth Type uses a manually generated token. In Sigma, you can generate the token using a JavaScript script.

Follow these instructions to get the bearer Token.
